Reflection: Improving My Writing Process

Improved Essays
Throughout this semester I have changed my composing process, worked with multiple different writing prompts, and have completed various activities, such as working in groups and participating in discussions with my peers. This has helped me to understand and learn how to use my peers and other resources to aid me with our topics and improve our writings. I have also had to read from the book “Everyone’s an Author”, which was made by Andrea Lunsford, Michal Brody, Lisa Ede, Beverly J. Moss, Carole Clark Papper, and Keith Walters. This has all come to help improve my writing abilities and prepare me for the next course on argumentative writing.

The story about my reading experience consisted of explaining that I am an avid reader, and why. This helped me to improve in my writing skills by forcing me to recall some the experiences that helped make me into who I am, and write about those times I would never otherwise think of. The story about an event that caused me to change in some way consisted of how I became antisocial, this helped to improve my writing because, unlike the first story, I focused on something that changed me for the worse, rather than the better showing me, and have me talk of the cause of how it happened, and putting it into words. The third prompt gave me the article “Don’t Just Talk About Change. Show It.” by Mick Wilz as told by Patricia R. Olsen and answer questions based off of the reading. This helped me to use my reading comprehension and logic to discern the answers to the questions and to, afterwards have to make a story with a similar prompt of a struggle I overcame and how I can encourage others with what I learned from it. My analysis of an advertisement I used one for the restaurant Pizza Hut that had a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle on it to and how that could draw in customers by the association of it with the character. This helped my writing skills by making me use my logic to determine the cause of why Pizza Hut would use animated characters, and spend the money to get permission to use them, for their advertisements. All in all, these different prompts have helped me to have

Writing has always been one of the most difficult skills that I have been learning through my college career, but it has also been the most important skill because unlike other skills writing affects my works across all courses or subjects. Writing has also helped me to get in to UMD, receive scholarships, and be accepted in research programs. Therefore, all the effort that I have made to improve my writing skill is worth it. From experience, writing is not like other skills that one can learn overnight, for me, writing skill is very slow progress and requires a lot of writing and reading; this is what I got from this class. In this class, my writing has advanced because I am reading more, practicing more, and writing more.…

The way I move through my own writing process is simple. I always start with research on a specific topic that an instructor gives me. I’m that kind of person that loves to highlight the important details of someone else’s information so I can admire her or his work in my papers. Then after finding the right amount of work to compose my own paper I start out with a title page.…

Throughout the first semester of College Composition, I wrestled with three essays, all differing in format and content. The first was a narrative that reflected our educational experience. After this came an analysis of a visual text, followed by a research paper. The narrative was the easiest to write; however, I acquired important skills for writing the other two, which were in a less familiar format. With the three essays, I learned about my own writing skills and habits concerning development and critical thinking, time management, and organization.…

At the beginning of this semester I was extremely nervous to be taking a writing class. Growing up I was never a strong writer. However, throughout this course I believe I have become a better writer. This change in my write can be attributed to the different assignments throughout the course. One aspect of my writing that has improved tremendously is my ability to form sentences from increased use of active voice, proof reading, and sentence organization.…

Knowing I had to aim for a different audience this time around really affected my writing. When my tone for the original paper was rather informal and even somewhat fun, now I had to write for the APA, a group of people who take this line of work very seriously (as they should). Due to this, I gave my arguments a more serious tone, and I even expanded my vocabulary a bit to give a good impression. If I want the APA to listen to me, I should write in a tone they would use. I was careful about the sources I used for this.…

Project 2 Toni Morrison, bell hooks, and James Baldwin are all writers, professionals crafting fully realized people living in black and white, and poetically weave humor and personal tragedy into their essays about injustice. In the past, I always avoided calling myself a writer because I simply could not compare with them or their contemporaries. Throughout the years, I realized that forbidding myself from using that title was not a humble act, but instead, limiting myself from strengthening my writing through making excuses. Writing did not come naturally to me. I could do the bare minimum.…

My Reflection of this Semester Throughout this semester I was approached with several challenging objectives that caused me to think critically while writing. Writing has never been a strong point of mine. When I came to The University of Alabama, I was apprehensive that I did not acquire the necessary skills to take a college English class. Auspiciously, I feel that I have met the desirable course outcomes and expanded my knowledge on writing.…

Throughout my academic career, I have taken and been successful in a large number of English classes. In high school, my writing followed an academic format, mostly writing towards a prompt. Although I was able to gain writing practice, I never received a large amount of feedback that I could use to help myself in the future. Similarly, when I started college I practiced different forms of academic writing, structured around a prompt and focused on the end goal of a good grade. However, in college I was able to start gaining useful feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of my writing that I could apply to later assignments.…

They encouraged me to drop what I learned and to start off fresh. Using personal voice and stories within my writing was never something I thought I would do. “Shitty First Drafts” validated my own writing process because multiple drafts is not something many people do. It allowed me to see that I was not weird for wanting to revise multiple times. “On Keeping a Notebook” showed me that a personal flare and some fun stories can make your writing come to life.…

Throughout the course of the semester, my ability as a writer has increased at a slight level. The semester began on a rough patch with my initial submission of assignment one, but that was quickly resolved in my revisions. Since that point, my grades have been relatively similar. I would accredit this improvement to the feedback I received on the first assignment, although some of my faults could be seen in the next assignment as well. Since that point, however, my writing has been relatively consistent.…

Like I previously stated I learned how to do many things with my writing this semester. The first essay we wrote, a narrative, was probably my favorite essay to write. Although it was my favorite, it was definitely not my best. I wrote my essay and felt like it was complete and worthy to turn in. Little did I know that was not the case.…

I was not an excellent writer at the beginning of the school year, but I can gladly say now that I have inherited more writing skills that I will benefit from in the future. One of those skills is being able to reflect on every angle on my topic to allow me to organize my ideas accurately. This skill is beneficial to learn, for it helped with my report essay to acquire the focus of my paper more clearly. Moreover, this skill helped me write papers in my other classes more easily and efficiently. Likewise, my voice can be read strongly throughout the personal narrative essay, because the passion I had for my topic was an emotional one.…

I am very thankful for taking this course as I feel I have vastly improved in multiple areas of my communication. I had never taken a course that involved writing a paper and then presenting a speech on it to the class. It was either one or the other, not both. That is what intrigued me to take this course before the semester started. For myself great strides were made in my ability to convince readers through the toulmin model, learned in this course.…

My approach to reading has changed over the semester. Before this class, I would just read without taking notes. In reading, I would just read instead of looking up the difficult word or using context clues to figure out what the word means. Now during my reading I annotate and look up unknown vocabulary words. When I look up the difficult word, I would find the closest appropriate definition.…
