Argumentative Papers

Throughout my long career of english classes, the last of which was in high school, I have written a wide variety of papers. The one I have the most experience with is the argumentative paper. I have written more of these than I can count, and have started to understand how to structure these and format them. Included in this extensive training is the implementation of citations. For the content of these argumentative papers I was instructed to research sources. In my junior year I was taught to use scholarly articles and those that have credible authors. In order to find these scholarly sources, I used UVU OneSearch. I only used a couple of scholarly articles in my papers though, so I still need to advance my skills of finding useful scholarly information. A lot of times I would want to write about a specific side of an argument that I was passionate about, but it would be hard to find credible information to back up a point that I was determined to make. This made it hard, because I was then left not knowing whether I should change my point of view or even the topic altogether.

We were assigned a paper on the upcoming presidential election. Since I was writing this paper around the middle of the campaigning, there was lots of sources that I could pull from. I was asked, as part of the paper, to decide which way all the swing states would go, as well as who would win the election overall. I pulled from a lot of census records to determine the major influencing populations in each of the swing states, and then used the way the various populations typically vote as a way to decide who would get the state’s votes.
