Grasping the Text in Their Town:
The Book of Acts was written by Luke, this part of Acts takes place in Jerusalem after Jesus has ascended back into heaven and his promise of the appointed twelve the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. The beginning takes place in Acts 6:1-3 where Peter and the other apostles are faced with a challenge within the Chrisitan community. "Now at this time while the disciples were increasing in number, a complaint arose on the part of the Hellenistic Jews against the native Hebrews, because their widows were being overlooked in the daily serving of food. (NIV). The conflict arises because many Jews migrated to Jerusalem to spend their final years in the Holy City and die there. In Jersualem the original language was Aramaic but the Hellenistis form Diaspora spoke in Greek. The Apostles felt they did not have the time to handle community matters their focus was on prayer and evanglezing. Peter then states to the others,” And so, brothers, select seven men who are well respected and are full of the Spirit and wisdom. We will give them this responsibility.” Acts 6:3 . We are not Apostles and did not witness Jesus’ ascension into heaven. We also do not have a creed that gives widows certain rights over others, we too have 2000 years of separation between us. We also do not speak Hewbrew or Aramaic and are not living in a covenant community. However spiritually we can see that Jesus is showing his hand in living out a Christian life. Even though in Acts this was the infancy we can see how the church developed. We can assume that Luke eants us to live out our lives as the apostles did by fulfilling the Great
