Argumentative Essay: Should The Government Ban Assault Weapons?

Should the government be able to restrict the American people’s access to assault weapons and limit magazine sizes? This question has divided the nation. The Assault Weapons Ban of 1994 banned large capacity magazines and assault weapons. Then in 2004 the ban was lifted and never renewed. Now Americans are wondering if it should be renewed after many mass shootings like in Newtown, Connecticut. According to the FBI, more people in America are murdered every year by weapons such as knives, personal weapons and blunt objects than assault rifles. Also, gun supporters argue that it would infringe on the Second Amendment. Then, should large capacity magazines be banned? This topic is a big controversy. Supporters say that it should be limited to ten rounds. Gun advocates say a ban would do nothing to prevent deaths. Finally, what are legitimate reasons uses for assault weapons? That limit should be fifteen rounds. Fifteen rounds are the number of rounds police carry around in their magazines. Civilians should have the right to have the same chance as the police who protect them. Also, assault weapons should not be banned because the statistics show that it would only make a small difference because there is already assault weapons on the street and banning assault weapons would also infringe on the second amendment, “The right to bear arms”. Another reason why they should not be banned is because the assault weapons ban of 1994, according to statistics, showed that the ban had little effect and non-assault weapons crime rate stayed the same. Additionally, assault weapons should not be banned because they have self-defense and recreational uses. When looking at all the statistics, it makes sense to not ban assault weapons.
