On April 20th, 1999, two armed students walked into Columbine High School, shooting and killing thirteen people and injuring many more. On December 12th, 2012, an armed adult walked into Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut, shooting and killing over twenty people. On February 14th, 2018, an armed adult walked into a high school located in Florida, killing seventeen and injuring seventeen more. With today’s uprising in school shootings, and other active shooter events, Americans have been protesting gun violence, voicing their opinions and ideas on how to help stop these massacres that have become common in American society. After the infamous Columbine shooting took place, police around the country realized the major flaw of their response tactics and decided to change their pre-planned responses. Police will now respond to an active shooter scenario, even if it’s by themselves, by entering the building and going straight to the threat. The Columbine shooting made National news, which also resulted in many other school districts stepping up school security. A large amount of different school districts across the country now have police officers that are dedicated to the school to guard. “Armed officers were present at least once a week in 43% of all public schools during the 2015-2016 school year, compared with 31% of schools a decade before” (Guardian). Unfortunately, during the Florida school shooting, the deputy sheriff that was responsible for guarding the students inside the school, didn’t want to protect the faculty or students from the shooter, and refused to enter the school to attempt an end to the situation. This shooting was the incident that sparked major protests and even more outrage from the public.
