“Did you know that in 2014, women working full time in the United States typically were paid just 79 percent of what men were paid, a gap of 21 percent”(Hill)? Women in the past few years hardly obtain the same equality as men retain. “In 1920, women were finally allowed to vote due to the passing of the nineteenth amendment” (“Women’s Rights”). It took 95 years for the world to accept women to simply vote. There were also various amount of jobs that women were not able to attain because they were not socially accepted. The wage gap speaks for itself as it causes arguments and discussion about contention for pay. Women should earn an equal amount of money as men do because women are equivalent to men. “This allowed to overturn the Supreme Court’s decision in Ledbetter v. Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co., Inc., 550 U.S. 618 (2007), which severely restricted the time period for filing complaints of discrimination concerning compensation”(“Are women treated”). The act was signed to stop discriminatory compensation. In April 8 2014, President Obama signed two directives to potentially ease the pay differential between some male and female workers. The United States Congress approving the directives would furthermore improve the wage gap. However, the following day Republicans in the Senate blocked the idea and the directives were no longer active. President Obama demonstrated that he recognized the discrimination of female workers; but he was not successful with his directives towards females.
Women have a “glass ceiling” when trying to move up in the work industry. “A glass ceiling is an invisible barrier that prevents women from rising above middle management positions”(Hardinge). This invisible barrier stops a women’s potential in the workforce due to males dominating jobs. A woman that has been at her job for a lengthy amount of time compared to a man who is fairly recent to the same job as the women has a lower chance of moving up on the career ladder. “Women are fast becoming our most educated workers ‒ they are attending school at higher rates, and they are entering a wide range of careers and deepening their work experience”, an accompanying fact sheet on the report says (Bidwell). Although women add on to their work experience, they still face unequal pay. Earning the highest degree also plays no role in the current wage gap. Women have no other outlook but to wait for what future has in hold for them.
Women and men have their differences and similarities. Both deserve equal pay, respect, power and advantages. Today’s wage gap displays the unequal pay for women. Statistics prove that women are treated unfairly in their workplace. Males dominating in female dominated jobs present information on how males overpower women. The glass escalator shows the advantages males get over women. Women deal with prejudice and discrimination while men are perceived as the dominant gender. Only time will tell if women will gain all the advantages males receive. For now, men will earn more money, respect, power and
