Being in charge of the Olympics is not an easy task. Issues between individuals and countries cause conflict throughout the Olympic process. Twenty-four African and Caribbean countries departed from the Summer Games in 1976. This was a result of the IOC refusing to bar the New England rugby tour through South Africa. There were also complaints against China competing under more than one delegation. Under pressure, they are forced to end the bickering between countries and side with a nation. Of course the nation who didn’t receive support from the IOC will become angry and protest or possibly depart from the Games. During the Rio Games, the Russian governments position over homosexuality threatened the games. These types of problems call for a cautious approach, being careful not to offend anyone. Otherwise spectators will view it as a violation of their civil liberties They respect the sovereignty in Russia as well as China and have learned to address these issues without offending any athletes. As Coates said, they are often asked if they’re ashamed of decisions they have made.
