Sexual violence is an utmost concern in our country. According to a recent survey by the US Bureau of Justice Statistics, “out of 5.36 million cases, 284,350 sexual violence cases were filed.” Each year thousands of cases go unreported and a majority of the cases that are reported never bring justice to the victim. Due to the increasing amount of sexual assault cases, harsher punishments should be placed into effect for those convicted of assault. Also, a clearer, more defined definition of what is considered assault should be declared. The punishment should be for anyone who commits this infraction. This method of discipline will help the violator manage their emotions and it will teach why their actions were wrong. Also, it will allow a good lesson come from horrendous acts. If possible, a formal apology to the victim would help the victim cope with the after-effect of assault. How many times a day do we see someone being mistreated and how often do we help these people? Honestly, most people just walk away from the situation without even considering helping those in need. The issue with this method of “solving the problem” is people cannot simply walk away from their problems; our problems follow us like a dark, dreary shadow on a summer day. Sexual comments and actions are agonizing. It’s hard to ignore repeated actions and comments. You can’t run away from them.
