Using Finger Digit Ratios (2D:4D) to Determine the Sex Differences in Empathising and Systemising Behaviours Introduction Foetal Testosterone (fT) has been suggested to indicate different sex behaviours and play a large part in shaping the human brain, for example, a ‘male’ systematic brain or even extreme masculine brain conditions such as Autism. Studies have suggested that ‘male foetuses produce 2.5 times more testosterone than females’ (Auyeung et al, 2006), and this testosterone has been linked to specific male behaviours, such as ‘systemising’. This is the ‘drive to analyse or construct systems’ (Auyeung et al, 2006) and is commonly thought of as a male behaviour/trait. Females who have been born with an overproduction of male hormones…

Aaron Devor, the author of the essay “Gender Role Behaviors and Attitudes”, states that gender is a social construct that has very little to do with biology. On the other hand, Deborah Blum, in her essay “The Gender Blur: Where Does Biology End And Society Take Over”, claims that while society has an effect on gender, so does biology. In this essay, I plan to present the argument that biology and society both have an effect on gender. I, like Blum, noticed biological gender differences in my children (two boys and a girl). As a father who has raised his children to believe that, men and women both do the housework, I noticed that my boys were much more aggressive than my daughter ever was even before pre-school.…

There are distinct characteristics that tend to be associated with women, such as being more loving, nurturing, and affectionate in comparison to men (Brody). Differences between men and women often result from social interactions and experiences that occur in one’s life. From the moment they are born, parents treat girls differently than boys in a way that can result in neurological differences (Boyd & Bee). For instance, when comparing newborns of both sexes, it is evident that parents cradle girls more than they do boys…

In regards to gender, the “nature versus nurture” debate refers the opposition between a biologically-based conception and one grounded in social psychology. On the “nature” side, gender is a matter of a person 's physiological makeup. There are varying accounts of what body parts specifically are indicative of gender, with gonads, chromosomes, and reproductive organs being among the contenders for criterion of gender. Regardless, on this view gender and sex are correlated, and “male” and “female” are the only existing categories. Those individuals born with the appropriate “male” physiology are men, and those with the corresponding correct “female” anatomy are women.…
