When Jeanette eats seafood she will start to feel sick to her stomach. Since finding out she has an intolerance to seafood, Jeanette has learned what foods to use as a substitute to seafood and how to cope with the challenge of not eating seafood. When Jeanette eats anything that has white sugar in it she gets a migraine. Excluding white sugar from her diet takes a lot of effort for Jeanette. Jeanette has many challenges with not eating white sugar and has had to find substitutes for many different foods.
One of the biggest difficulties that Jeanette has to face with white sugar is not being able to eat chocolate. Jeanette says “chocolate was my stress reliever. If I was having a bad day I would have chocolate. If I was having a good day I would have chocolate. If I was stressed I would have chocolate.” I couldn’t imagine going without chocolate and I definitely couldn’t imagine going without sugar.
Another difficulty Jeanette faces because of her intolerance to white sugar is what she is able to drink. She is no longer able to have juice, pop, lemonade, or sweet tea. This is difficult for Jeanette, because she used to drink sweet tea quite frequently. Now Jeanette substitutes sugary drinks with water, unsweetened tea, and black tea. Jeanette now drinks about six to eight glasses of water per day, and on good days about eight to twelve glasses.
