An example of this occurred in Kentucky in 2015. Kim Davis, a county clerk in Rowan County, Kentucky, has issued marriage licenses for years. Davis’s religious background is Christian, which goes against the marriage of same-sex couples. Davis felt that marrying same-sex couples went against her religious belief, so she refused to issue marriage licenses to anyone under these circumstances. According to NBC news, Davis refused anyone in her office to issue marriage licenses of this sort, and this created conflict between freedom of religion and civil rights. (NBC News) Davis’s actions caused her to be sued by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) because she would not give marriage licenses to four same-sex couples. According to The Washington Post, Davis appeared in court because she refused to follow multiple court orders saying she had to issue the marriage licenses (Higdon). Davis could avoid going to jail if she let other deputies’ sign the marriage licenses instead of her. After a court recess, Davis failed to appear back in court. A couple of the positive aspects of same-sex marriage becoming legal are that same-sex couples will be able to marry just like heterosexual couples and same-sex marriage can help boost the economy. A few of the negative aspects of same-sex marriage are that this goes against some people’s religious views, people think children need to be raised by a mother and father not by parents of the same gender, and people are against using their tax dollars to support something that is forced on them without their opinion.
