Have you ever noticed that Americans with disabilities have so much more benefits than people with disabilities anywhere else? Even a question like that is a little far-fetched. Americans with disabilities do not have the proper accommodations but that is definitely better than having no accommodations at all. People with disabilities in other countries believe it or not, have no accommodations whatsoever. I strongly believe that each country in the world should have their own disability act. I don’t know about you, but I find that pretty sad! Not to mention that unequal treatment among the disabled community even goes a little further. Women with disabilities are disadvantaged twice as much as the males with disabilities. Females go through exclusion because of both their gender and their disability. Let’s take a look at some more discrimination towards people with disabilities. Violence against disabled children occurs at an annual rate of 1.7 times higher than the rate for children without a disability. Disturbingly, this doesn’t surprise me at all. If disabled children were treated equally, this would not happen. Let’s move on to the financial aspect of it. People who have disabilities have to pay extra expenses to try to receive a standard of living equal to that of a non-disabled person. Now if you think this is treating the disabled people equal, something is seriously wrong. In the UK, the extra cost of disability is 11% to 69% of income. In Australia, the extra cost is 29% to 37% of income. Also, people with disabilities have lower employment rates than the average person. The disabled people who are employed, either work part-time or are in the informal sector. Their wages are less than a normal person’s wages. When the public makes an attempt to accommodate the disabled, they do not guarantee the accommodations will help the disabled person to achieve their highest potential. What’s the point in even trying then if the disabled community is not benefiting to their highest capacity? Just look at these statistics. The rates of lower educational attainment are significantly higher with disability rates. There are 19% less-educated people with disabilities and 11% well-educated with disabilities. This isn’t because the disabled are not as smart as normal people. 90% of disabled children in foreign countries are not educated and do not go to school.
