What would happen if an alien species attacked Earth 50 years ago, and we managed to fight them off temporarily? The book “Ender’s Game,” by Orson Scott Card, describes exactly that. The story is about a boy named Ender in those times, and one of the most significant decisions that he makes throughout the book is agreeing to train in battle school because he would protect Valentine, get away from Peter, and he was literally born for it. The book starts out when Ender is 6 years old, and he goes to school like everyone else. Ender however is different because he gets chosen to go to battle school where he finds out about the battle game in which he has to train with an army. One of the most important decisions that affected the story was that Ender agreed to go to battle school because he would protect Valentine, stay away Peter, and he realizes that he was literally born for it. Valentine is Ender’s beloved sister. She always protected Ender from Peter when he was younger and was bullied around. Ender wanted to help her back by fighting the buggers and keeping them from attacking Earth once more. Peter, his brother, was the thing he hated the most in his life. He always bullied him and feared that he was actually like him when he didn’t want to. He also had a conversation with Graff where he found out that there was a reason that he was born a third. As it turned out, Peter and Valentine weren’t good enough, so Ender was supposed to be the perfect one. There are a number of real life meanings that could be taken out of the statement is that family is one of the most important aspects of life that drive your decisions. In real life, when someone decides to join the army, they do it not only to serve the country, but also to protect their families from outside harm. Many elements of the story are carefully written and detailed to give the reader a mental picture of the story. If I were to give it a rating, I would give it 4.5 out of 5 stars in the general category of the story. As you can see, Ender’s game is really quite an interesting and enjoyable book to read. It is a story with meaning behind the text to give the reader a life lesson about the importance of family, and how war affects it. Actions throughout the book made by the main character caused major impacts on the course of the story. Ender’s character changes dramatically from the beginning to the end of the story both mentally and physically.
