Introduction Almost 20 years ago, two high school students altered the public school environment as we knew it at that time. Granted, there were plenty of other incidents involving guns and school grounds, but none on this massive level. Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold took the time to journal and plot the murders of their peers and teachers at Columbine High School in April 1999. The journals that were left behind tell just some of what they were experiencing; but no one could quite figure out the motive for the mass murder. Then there were no one to explain as both Harris and Klebold took their own lives after they were finished.…

Another theme touched on the subject, "Dealing with Disasters," which includes the accessibility of guns to "young people" (Aronson 37). The book disagrees with the National Rifle Association (NRA) that states "Guns don't kill people, people do," by saying that the presence of guns in a home increase the probability that young people will use them on other young people. In addition, the book also centers around a specific research that all the school massacres had in common: all the shooters were adolescent boys (Aronson 48). The author makes a theme of bullying and taunting and suggests reducing or eliminate it by implementing serious policies such as zero-tolerance policies that many schools have for weapons, drugs, and sometimes fighting (Aronson 71). Lastly, the authors major theme is introducing the "jigsaw" classroom method and address its problems and benefits. "…

School shooters also brought about a new definition of suicide: suicide by mass murder, as males prefer an immediate means to end their life such as a firearm (Verlinden et al., 2000). School shooters such as Harris and Klebold, Cho, and Kazmierczak all engaged in aggrieved entitlement, believing because their peers had emasculated them, they were entitled to have their revenge. Each of these shooters were mercilessly bullied for being “less than a man”, were rebuffed in their attempts to date women, could not live up to societal and peer expectations of being “cool”, and were not confident in their masculine identity (Kalish & Kimmel, 2010). Prior to the shooting, students at Columbine teased the shooters for being gay and girly, would throw rocks at them, and some students went so far as to publish an article in the paper stating the pair were a gay couple (Kalish & Kimmel, 2010). Both of these individuals were part of a “warrior” culture, as Harris’ father was in the army (Kalish & Kimmel, 2010).…
