The sunnah is a collection of sayings, deeds, and teaching on varying aspects of a Muslim’s life. The Quran even states “Oh you who believe, Obey God and Obey the Messenger…” (Quran 4:59). Since the Quran is the leading authority in Islamic law, obeying the Messenger, or in this case, his deeds, sayings, and teachings, is a requirement for all Muslim’s. In addition to the sunnah, there is also there is also the hadith of Mohammed. The sunnah and hadith are different in that the sunnah are the actual acts, deeds, or sayings specifically from Mohammed, whereas the hadith are written or oral narratives of Mohammed (Baderin, 2009). The Quran is clear and establishes a firm foundation regarding the value of human life. The sunnah of Mohammed further identifies how life is created and that ensoulment is completed during that process. Ijma continues the process by establishing an exact time following conception that ensoulment occurs. Qiyas are used to provide guidance for family planning and the use of contraception. For a practicing Muslim, few, if any, grey areas exist surrounding the subject of abortion. The analytical approach to abortion in Islam using the accepted methods for developing laws prevents abortion from being an accepted practice. Regardless of the progressive nature of other religions and cultures, Islam is bound to follow the Quran. This presents an impassable roadblock for any who desire an abortion and wish to remain a
