Some says history should unveil all the truths about our past, while others say it should not because if it does it will cast their mind back on to the ugly experiences or the brutalities of the past. We learn about Columbus to be one of the great men who discover America without knowing about his bad deeds, but this great pioneers of history James Lowen and Howard Zinn have educate us on his bad deeds in their books “ Lies my teacher told me “ and the “People’s history of America. They have talked about his selfish and greedy behavior that he use to achieve whatever he wanted at any time without considering the feeling of other peoples. I again find out that he was the first person to start the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. He also exploit people by taking their gold, spices and wealth from them. It was also inhuman to hear that the Indians who were not able to find the gold fingers are cut and bleed to death. I refer to Zinn which says this words after Columbus “As soon as I arrived in the Indies, on the first Island which I found, I too some of the native by force in other that they might learn and give information of whatever there is in these parts “(Zinn). This class has help me to discover so many things that I did not know before, It makes me understand why we celebrate thanksgiving as one of the national holidays in this country, and clearify It to me that the pilgrims are founders of thanksgiving , and it celebrate our ethnocentrism. Although we have being saying that slavery is of the past, it still exist all over the country in a more civilized way. We can see how the blacks and the whites continue to fight in the TV stations this days. I believe it is due to the hatred that they have developed for each other some years back. Howard says “There is not a country in world history in which racism has been more important , for so long a time, as the United States”(Zinn). The kind of treatment that was giving to the blacks those days was inhuman. They made them work a lot with no or just a little pay. They torture them both physically and emotionally. They starved them for a long time, and at times fed them on foods that are not even good for the animals to eat. But with all that, the whites feel all was okay and the slaves were happy in those kind of situations that they were. Howard has quoted this words from a former slave to shows that the slaves were not happy, but they pretend to be. “John little, a former slave, wrote. They say slaves are happy, because they laugh, and are merry. I myself and three or four others, have received two hundred lashes in the day, and had our feet in fetters; and make others laugh at the ratting of our chains. Happy men we must have been! We did it to keep down trouble, and to keep our hearts

Even if Columbus had not sailed to the Americas, it would not make much difference as he was not the only person interested in explorations and expeditions. Much Europeans were focused in exploring and the only difference would be that the Natives wouldn’t have gone through such kind of brutality and cruelty conducted by Columbus. People aren’t much aware about the myth of Christopher Columbus and they still believe that he discovered America. But it’s a completely false fact and he can clearly be considered to be a villain as he has been gaining honor for something that he never did and also conducted genocide of the Native American people. Therefore, he is clearly a…

Christopher Columbus was not the man many tell him to be. As a society, we tend to look at all the great and glorious things he did, most notably discovering the Americas. Almost all of the time, however, we do not look at all the negatives, which there are arguably many more of. These include his harsh treatment of natives, thirst for wealth and the terrible acts he committed as governor of the Indies. Upon first reaching the natives, Columbus describes them as very friendly, extremely willing to trade all they had with the Spaniards.…

Christopher Columbus has always been a controversial topic. Some individuals believe he was a hero and founded the Great America at no one’s expense. On the other hand, some individuals believe that Christopher Columbus was a deleterious, inconsiderate, and clueless explorer. Was Columbus a thief and a murderer and should he have his own holiday, is the topic of theologian Dr. Tink Tinker and BBC producer Mark Freeland’s article, “Thief, Slave Trader, Murderer: Christopher Columbus and Caribbean Population Decline” (Tinker and Freeland, 2008, Pg.25). After deliberation and a close look at sources Tinker and Freeland argue that Columbus was a thief and murderer who should not be honored.…

Douglass, often referred to as “the father of the civil rights movement” was born into a life of slavery. HOTA Summer Assignment Chapter one: Analysis: Zinn thouroughly believes that Columbus is an awful person and portrays him to be so when explaining how he would cut the hands off of the Indians who did not bring him enough gold or if they ran away he would track them down and kill them. Even though it was almost impossible to find the amount of gold that Columbus was asking for from each person. But, Zinn does not believe that Columbus was the only horrid explorer, he also states that Cortes treated the Aztec similarly, and Pizzaro to the Incas, and the English settlers of Virginia and Massachusetts to the Powhatans and the Pequots. Zinn basically states how almost all European settlers in North America treated Native Americans in the same way, committing “genocide” to claim what they saw as their destiny.…

The holiday of Columbus Day has kindled an irrefutable amount of controversy in recent years. One side of this bilateral argument asserts that Columbus opened up a global trade network while the other declares that his travels led to the decimation and abuse of the Native American population. One argues that Columbus Day should exist, while the other calls for its removal. However, this argument, along with the current Columbus Day, is overly simplified. To extract the true meaning of Columbus Day, Columbus himself must be withdrawn from the center of the holiday, and the holiday should recognize both the positive and negative results of October 12th, 1492.…

Columbus Day, observed on the second monday of October, commemorates the foundations of Europe’s presence in the New World and the massive exchange of people, trade, and ideas that have led to what our country is today. It is a reminder of the absolute terror and cruelty the indigenous peoples that had, for the most part, been peacefully living on their land for thousands of years until that point, been subjected to. Christopher Columbus was a man responsible for the decimation of three major civilizations, as well as the ultimate genocide of the indigenous peoples as a whole, one of the largest in human history. Columbus alone committed an array of horrific acts, using the Indians as sex slaves and extorting them for labor, stealing their land and goods, and hunting them for sport and dog food. His choices and treatment influenced how other would later view and deal with the Indians, eventually leading to their near extinction.…

In the chapter ‘Forget Columbus’ of the book ‘The Inconvenient Indian’, the author Thomas King writes about his point of view on the forgotten history of the Native Americans. He conveys about the tales made up about the natives and americans engraved in the history to mainly appeal to the white audience. The author starts the chapter by telling how insignificant was the discovery of the land of natives made by Columbus. According to him the only reason why he was given credit and recognized because his story as Columbus sailing the oceans, travelling across with interesting adventures and going through hardships with a letter to the Emperor of Indies by the King and Queen of Spain captured the imagination of the audience and met the expectations…
