The negative effects of drug abuse affect individuals, who abuse, but also their families, friends, businesses, and government resources. According to the ONDCP recently reported that in 2002, the economic cost of drug abuse to the United States was $180.9 billion. Despite increased public awareness, drinking and drugged driving continues. According to the “National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s” (NHTSA) National Roadside Survey, more than 16% of weekend, night drivers tested positive for prescription, and illegal drugs (11% tested positive for illegal drugs). In 2009, of the fatal injuries 18% of the drivers tested positive for at least one drug (illegal, prescription and/or over-the-counter). Drug abusers are three times likely to contract a sexually transmitted disease than non users. It is common for drug users to have multiple partners, and trade drugs for sex or money. Crime and drug abuse are very common. The crimes range from driving under the influence, domestic abuse, robberies, assaults, prostitution and rape. Parents who use drugs often put very little effort into providing a happy and stable home for their children. Drug use could prevent them from providing food, shelter, and clothing for their children. Child protection might take children from parents and place them in foster care or with a relative. Causing trauma for the child, the abusive parent might be arrested, which causes more strain on the parent child
