Argumentative Essay About Thanksgiving

Last November, a week before Thanksgiving, I was listening to the morning radio talk show The Woody Show and the hosts were talking about how excited they were for the Thanksgiving feast. They all went around and shared what was their perfect meal for that day. It ranged from fried turkey, to stuffing, cornbread, green bean casserole, and towards the end the hosts argued about cranberry sauce. However, they all agreed that pumpkin pie was essential to the perfect meal. I found it very interesting that while they argued about the way the meal was executed, they all agreed on the basic components to the meal-I didn’t. I’ve never had the famous green bean casserole much less pumpkin pie-I’m allergic but, it wouldn’t matter because in my culture we eat our specialty foods. Although I was born here my parents are from Central America, so in my family we celebrate holidays as my parents would in their country. For Thanksgiving we don’t have a turkey but instead have pupusas, panes con pollo, tamales and for dessert: arroz con leche, empanadas de platano, and pan dulce. Thanksgiving is …show more content…
It is believed that on these days the veil to separating the afterworld and earth is weakened and so the souls can visit their families. On the 1st the souls are believed to come visit and on the 2nd families go to the cemetery and decorate their loved one’s grave in honor of them. I found this strange at first but, a couple of years ago after my great-grandmother died and then later after a close friend died I could see the value of this holiday tradition. This is the day that those who still remain on earth can honor their loved ones who are no longer here. While I don’t believe that they can see what is being done for them I still think this day allows us to keep the memory of our loved ones
