Some similarities I found are that the articles “School Nutrition Programs” and “Effect of Food Service Nutrition Improvements on Elementary School Cafeteria Lunch Purchase Patterns” talk about childhood obesity. They both include the fact that children are not eating what they are supposed to eat, it gives them higher chances of becoming overweight at that young age and also of becoming overweight adults and potentially obese. Some differences I found between these two articles is that “School Nutrition Programs” focuses on the idea that children who eat lunch as part of the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) are at higher risk of obesity. It goes in depth in that while their research was made, they saw many children who did not even know how to peel an orange. In contrast, the article “Effect of Food Service Nutrition Improvements on Elementary School Cafeteria Lunch Purchase Patterns” focuses on improving the variety and nutritious foods in the school cafeterias so kids are tempted, exposed and also encouraged to eat them. Not only children but society is also affected by this issue of childhood obesity. Children are the future of this world and we need to help them learn to be healthy so they grow as healthy adults. Extra pounds add extra risk for diabetes, heart disease and certain cancers, even among children which it might also bring social and economic consequences. I think another issue that society may be part of is that we are not informing children and parents the effects of obesity in the children. Lack of information is a part of this because kids do not know the effects that the food we eat have in our body and do not know what is and what is not healthy. Many families simply do not have the resources they need which includes time, money, and knowledge to buy and prepare nutritious food or be physically active every day. Low-income families, often have trouble affording healthier food and finding the time to cook it, and may live in the neighbors where not so much fresh food is offered.
