The Tundra is the coldest biome out of all of them. The word tundra means “treeless

plain”. The tundra is known for its frosty landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little

precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons. The tundra is characterized into two

types: arctic tundra, and alpine tundra. There are many different characteristics that make tundra

such a unique biome. The extremely low climate and low biodiversity are the most known. Most

of the energy and nutrients found in tundra are in the form of dead organic matter. The arctic

tundra is found in the northern hemisphere, but much of it extends south. The tundra can be

looked at as a type of cold desert. The growing season mostly ranges between 50 to 60 days,

Arctic foxes have beautiful white (sometimes blue-grey) coats that act as very

effective winter camouflage. When the seasons change, the fox’s coat does as well, to a brown or

sometimes grey color that provides camouflage. These colors help the fox to effectively hunt

rodents, birds, and even fish. The arctic fox is also known as the white fox, polar fox, or snow

fox. The arctic fox does not begin to shiver until the temperature drops to -94 degrees F. Its paws

have soles on the insides for additional insulation and to help it walk on the ice. The arctic fox

preys on any small creatures such as: lemmings, voles, ringed seal pups, fish, waterfowl, and

seabirds. It also eats small invertebrates, seaweed, and insects. Arctic foxes form monogamous

pairs during the breeding season and they stay together to raise their young in underground dens.

Arctic foxes do not hibernate, and are active all year-round. They build up their fat reserves

during the fall, and sometimes even increase their body weight by more than 50%. The average

head and body length of the male is 22 inches and for the female it is 20 inches. The tail is about

12 inches long for both

In the tundra, most of the months’ average temperature is under the freezing point. The winters are long and harsh; in contrast, the summers are short and somewhat warm; however, the average monthly temperature is never above 10°C. Alaska’s tundra support numerous avian migratory species during all four seasons, providing a breeding, rearing, staging, refugee and overwintering habitat. Some mammalian species that live in the Alaskan tundra are; muskox, caribou, foxes, wolves, lemmings and raptors. Some of the animals, such as the caribou, depend on tundra vegetation to survive the year. Foxes are dependent on the polar bear for the majority of its meals. For example, as soon as a polar bear is done consuming a seal, the arctic fox will devour the remainders left of the seal, since a polar bear is unable to consume an entire seal.…

Wetlands are the most abundant and productive aquatic ecosystems throughout the Arctic and in some cases, provide valuable carbon storage. They cover 11% of the Arctic land surface and have greater biodiversity than other Arctic freshwater ecosystems.
