World War One also known as the Great War happened during years 1914 to 1918. It involved nations from around the world killing more than twenty million people and destroying everything. The main reason besides the assassination of Archduke Francis Ferdinand are nationalism, militarism, imperialism, and alliances. Many people believed that this war was caused by the killing of Archduke Francis Ferdinand. It was the spark to the war but there are many other reasons that led to this war. Some of these reasons happened back in the late 1800’s. Such as Nationalism which means the love of one's country. Throughout the 1800's many groups were moved by nationalism. They tried to come together but the governments controlled their own people.

Imperialism is when one country takes over another. Some countries over powered other countries by economic, political, and cultural life's of others. From the industrial revolution in the 1800's, some European nation had a large control of other counties in the war. France and Germany were on a start of war several times when they argued about claims to Morocco. They made up a temporary compromise that didn’t really meet both countries standards. Militarism controlled the thinking of many European leaders before the war. These leaders thought only the use of force could solve problems between nations. The leaders also thought that a country with a strong military usually get what it wanted, and the weaker countries always lost. During the late 1800’s the system of alliances was a big thing that lead to the start of the war. Otto Von Bismark was the chancellor of Germany. He was afraid that France would find revenge for the defeat to Germany which happend in 1871. He then decided to keep France isolated and without allies. He especially did want the French with Russia. The French needed to be allies with Russia. An alliance between France and Russia was finally formed in 1894. In 1907, the triple Entente was formed. This was an alliance between Russia, France, and Great Britain. An attempt to spread harmony throughout Europe was made and all it did was cause a greater threat go the peace around the
