Ap Biology Reflection

I stepped into the AP biology classroom for the second time that day. It was just after school had ended around 4 in the afternoon, and my classmates and I had filed back into the room to start the task of completing the first lab of the year. We had all participated in the regional science fair, so we were all reasonably acquainted with the scientific method, making this lab setting something of relative normality to us. Despite this prior exposure to a lab type setting, this was different. This difference can be contributed mostly to the AP Biology teacher, Mr. Smith. Mr. Smith is an extremely demanding teacher, who expects a lot out of his students. This demanding nature creates a very high level environment, which I thrive in, and absolutely love. …show more content…
I found this to be one of the coolest things that I had done in school, as well as one of the most engaging. To me the idea of being able to change living things for the better through science was something that really stuck with me and has helped to inspire me to become a doctor. Using science assist others live better lives has been something that I have fantasized about for as long as I can remember. However my AP biology class was the first time that I was exposed to the possible methodology of accomplishing this goal. This intense interest in the subject matter fueled me to continually thrive throughout the course, as well as continually spark an interest in pursuing a degree in molecular biology at a post-secondary

BIOL 1010 ASSIGNMENT 1 OCT 6 BY JORDAN KAPITANY ST 100883963 Among the many scientific achievements of the twentieth century in the field of bio-technology scientists Paul Berg, Herbert W Boyer, Stanley N Cohen and team for their research that lead the party to discover a technique of taking genes from one organism and inserting them into another organism, also more formally known as Deoxyribonucleic Acid or DNA recombinant technology. In 1971 Berg and team successfully isolated DNA of virus found in monkey's known as lambda then placed the genetic material into DNA sequence of a different simian virus called SV4O. This was done by first using a DNA enzyme, a naturally occurring molecule that has the unique chemicals properties to sever the bonds in the DNA sequence, from a very specific kind of…

An electron microscope would be better than a light microscope because an electron microscope allows you to view objects much smaller than you can with a light microscope. It might be better to use a light microscope if you are viewing a live specimen and do not want to kill it. 2. Although still in the 334 class, I feel that the introduction is just enough material to get an individual hooked on the subject. I feel that instructing this lab would serve as a growing experience, bot for myself and my academic career. I found myself intrigued by the subject matter after having the opportunity to work under Kristina Metz last spring; the skills observed and learned from her have since fruition into my own position in the Microbiology Lab where I act as a student worker- such skills should show promising results if granted the opposing to teach a lab. It is my overall goal to make microbiology lab a welcoming environment that allows students to inquire, learn, and progress through the fundament micro course with ease via the techniques and subject matter reviewed in the…

One of the high school classes I take is Medical Interventions. Our last unit before winter break was about gene therapy, what it is used for, how it works, and what it will do for humans in the future. I was completely fascinated by all of it. I thought it was amazing how one simple fix in a small portion of DNA in one cell can cure someone of a disorder they have dealt with their entire life. Gene therapy could be the next huge medical breakthrough and could change the lives of everyone and to be able to witness that happen in my lifetime is amazing.…

--Last night, I had a dream in which I was taking a Biology midterm exam. For some reason, I did not begin studying for the exam until about five minutes before it was scheduled to start. After the exam was handed to me, I glanced at the questions and I was unprepared to answer any of them. I became very frightened, but, I remembered I could drop my lowest test score of the semester. So, I erased all of my answers and turned the test in.…

3.1 Cellular Metabolism: Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) is replicated when enzymes begin to unzip the DNA. The enzymes do this by breaking the hydrogen bonds that are between the pairs. After this occurs, the unpaired bases are now free to bind with other nucleotides. They may only bind if the nucleotides have the appropriate complementary bases. DNA polymerase now attaches DNA nucleotides to one end of the growing strand of nucleotides.…

On the day of the district science fair I was nervously pacing around looking at other people’s projects. Before any of that happened I remember walking into my college prep chemistry class months earlier and having my teacher, Dr. Sandomir, tell the class that all the students needed to do a STEM project as a major portion of their grade. We were given multiple months to complete the projects. A few weeks before the district science fair not many people were close to finishing their projects. Of the people able to finish by the deadline, Dr. Sandomir choose a few of them to be in the district science fair, and I was one of the individuals chosen.…

Throughout my senior year, in the AP Biology class, we did multiple labs in which we had to work in groups of four, and the lab members had to be switched with every lab. We were responsible for completing the lab within a certain time allotted by the teacher. We quickly realized that dividing the responsibilities and trusting each other was the only way to go if we wanted to finish on time. If we had not split of the tasks the lab would have resulted in being incomplete. We had to clearly communicate with each other what had to be done and how it had to be done.…

Science is a subject that I find captivating and this has fuelled my desire to delve deeper into the scientific principles that govern us. My interest has developed into a career choice, and I believe the biochemistry course encompasses topics that would provide me with the opportunity to carry out research to further my knowledge on biological processes. I’m constantly questioning how different processes work at a molecular level; whether it's a simple chemical reaction or the implication of a drug on genes. The thalidomide tragedy revolves around this, because the two enantiomers had such different effects on the body. I found this aspect fascinating and my curiosity has propelled me to undertake further exploration in other topics in order to develop my understanding of a subject.…

It had been a year since I've taken a biology class, my last being in senior year of high school. AP Biology was a must for a biology major, but taking "the basics" in the first year of community college was a norm and only slightly prepared me for taking Cellular and Molecular Biology. It was a small set back having to take this course since getting a 3 on the AP Biology Exam didn't exempt me in the first place, but in the light of things, I've told myself that this class will be a breeze for me. I knew all the materials; getting A's on most of the labs and tests only proved my pre-existing knowledge. The instructor was coffee-driven and energetic.…
