Perhaps because this movie hit home with a sub group and would not yield the revenue a common neutral hero villain movie would yield. One may see this from a negative aspect but the fact that a movie was made that depicts the immigrant struggle is a move forward for the Latino culture.…

Alfonso does not like that his teeth are crooked. He feels that if his teeth don’t line up perfectly, something is wrong with him. One quote from the beginning of the story is, “He decided he would fix his teeth by pushing on them. After breakfast that Saturday, he went to his room, closed the door quietly, turned the radio on, and pushed for three hours straight.” This is important because it shows how Alfonso is not confident in himself and how he is very self-conscious in what he does.…

In Mexico during the early 1980’s, a group of young siblings living in poverty tell an important story of the immigrant experience and the drives behind migration. Reyna Grande’s, The Distance Between Us, is a memoir written with the recurring appeal to the reader’s pathos. Grande uses the rhetorical strategy to keep the reader’s interest and to help them make personal connections to the story. Grande’s use of pathos helps to show not only the importance of understanding the immigrant experience, but also the importance of following your dreams. The Introduction of "The Travels" states that "to western Christendom the world [Marco Polo] revealed was almost wholly unknown." However, in the introduction he mentions the Franciscan travelers we’ve already encountered this semester.
