This type of therapy is based on Sigmund Freud’s theory of the unconscious mind (McLeod, 2007). The psychoanalyst listens to stories, dreams, and focuses on how their patients interact in a social setting. The psychoanalyst through this identifies the problematic patterns and behaviors and try to successfully pave a path of change (American Psychoanalytic Association). In Cognitive behavioral therapy the goal is that the individual becomes aware of their false or negative thoughts and can view situations more clearly and respond effectively (Mayo Clinic). Cognitive behavioral therapy is a short number of sessions, this however does not make it any less effective on patients. These medications do not treat the individual’s personality, but it does treat moods, or behaviors in the individual. Atypical antipsychotic drugs, which are known to treat schizophrenia, has been used in a study to treat seven individuals with antisocial personality disorder. The drug rebalances dopamine and serotonin, boosting mood, improving behavior, and mental processes (National Alliance of Mental Illness). The seven patients in the study showed an improvement in impulse behavior and anger (Brown, et al., 2014). Selective Serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRI’s) are sometimes given to individuals with antisocial personality disorder to decrease aggressiveness and irritability. This is especially useful if depression or/and anxiety are present along with antisocial personality disorder. Although this is not a direct treatment for antisocial personality disorder, it is an aid to reduce a few symptoms or characteristics of antisocial personality disorder (Harvard Health Publishing, 2013). Mood Stabilizers work to improve the individual’s mood in order to reduce anger, threatening behavior, and impulsivity
