Diagnosis Based on the information provided, Tony fits the diagnostic criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder listed in the DSM 5. Criteria A is “a pervasive pattern of disregard for and violation of the rights of others, occurring since the age 15 years, as indicated by three or more” of the listed behaviors (American Psychiatric Association, 2013.) Tony presents all seven of the requirements listed. “Failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors, as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrests (American Psychiatric Association, 2013.) “Irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated fights or assaults (American Psychiatric Association, 2013.)” Tony was thrown out of a house where he was living partly because of his temper. “Reckless disregard for safety of self or others (American Psychiatric Association, 2013.)” As stated before, Tony has been arrested for armed robbery and kidnapping. Tony held a man hostage with a machete while others stole the man’s car. Tony also reports cutting his wrist after an argument with his wife, and he jumped off of a bridge which caused several injuries. “Consistent irresponsibility, as indicated by repeated failure to sustain consistent work behavior or honor financial obligations (American Psychiatric Association, 2013.)” Tony has not held a job in seven years and has never paid child support. Lastly, “lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another (American Psychiatric Association, 2013.)” Tony seems to always have an explanation or excuse that minimizes his responsibility or his actions. A study showed the “heritability of aggression is between “44% and 72%” (Beidel, 2014.) Antisocial personality is more common in males than females (American Psychiatric Association, 2013.) This is important to take into consideration when diagnosing Tony. Tony’s family was extremely abusive and treated Tony as an “outcast.” It is crucial to consider Tony’s abuse and experiences as a child and teenage when learning Tony’s presentation, why some of the behaviors/patterns are present and deciding treatment
