Being a hero in Greek culture means to be able to put self aside in order to fulfill the journey. It also includes being able to ask putting yourself at risk in order to achieve a goal. Based off this definition, both Odyssey and Antigone fit in this definition, but the hero who better suits this description will have to be Antigone.
Although both of these text are different in the sense that one is a tragedy and the other is an epic; they also have some similarities as well as differences. One similarity is that both characters are on a mission. Odyssey is trying to “return home to Ithaca “(Homer

In fact Zeus told Hermes “Hermes, you’ve been our messenger before. Go tell that ringlet nymph it is my will to let that patient man Odysseus go home“(Homer Book V L. 30-33). Compared to Antigone, she had to stand up for herself. Let’s not forget that she is also a woman doing what was unexpected of what Greek women are supposed to do. Instead of her accepting that her brother is dead may not be accepted into the underworld with Hades; she spoke out against the king when she said “since you; a mere man, imposed them- have the force to trample on the god’s unwritten and infallible“(Sophocles L.54-55). This is the opposite of The Odyssey because Odysseus is being help and told by the gods of how to deal with his problems. Antigone had to learn how to cope with her problems and figure out how to solve them by herself. This is seen when Hermes aided Odysseus because he demanded to Calypso “Well send him off now and watch out for Zeus’ temper, cross him and he’ll really rough in you later” (Homer Book V L. 144-146) in order for him to defeat the goddess Calypso. Furthermore, Antigone inform the Kreon “my own death isn’t going to bother me, but I would be devasted to see my mother’s son die and rot unburied“ (Sophocles L. 503-505). She knows that she is going to be killed like her sister if she speaks out against the king, but does not care. Not only did she loose her brother but her husband (Kreon’s son), but she also lost her sister. She was losing everything unlike Odysseus who gained back everything he

During the relative time of Odysseus and Antigone, a hero could be a man or a woman, someone who belonged to a divine ancestry, who was favored by the Gods, and showed great courage and strength in one’s actions. When reflecting upon heroes from the works we have read, the first two that came to my mind were Sophocles 's Antigone, and Homer’s Odysseus. These two characters exhibit heroic actions throughout both works, and stick to their ways by portraying perseverance and confidence. Sophocles’ Antigone is about a passionate woman who arrives in Thebes to see that both of her brothers are dead. Her brother, Polyneices, is not being granted a proper burial because the infamous leader, Kreon, has prohibited a burial for him to occur.…

In Greek literature, there are many different stories of many different heroes. From Odysseus to Oedipus, we have seen all of their stories are different, but they have undeniable similarities in the hero’s personality and story. The Greek philosopher, Aristotle, noticed these similarities and decided to make a definition for what he called tragic heroes. His definition states the character must be noble, they must have a flaw, that flaw must cause their downfall, they must get an exceedingly harsh punishment for whatever they did wrong, they must have a moment where they realize what they did wrong, and the audience must leave with a lesson learned, not just sadness. In the Greek play, Antigone, by Sophocles, the newly appointed king, Creon,…
