To be a tragic hero a person must be high born, have a tragic flaw, a flaw that causes their downfall and have a catharsis. In the story “Antigone” by Sopholes a tragic hero is described exactly by those four components. A person can not be defined as a tragic hero unless they consist of all those components. In “Antigone” a character by the name of Creon is born into a royal family and eventually becomes king over his capital. Even though he was already a king he decided to take place as king over Thebes. He took the title king after the death of Oedipus his brother-in-law and his nephews. In the story Creons tragic flaw was that he had to much pride. Creon felt as though he was always right and everyone was beneath him. A line to prove this fact is when Creon said “You consider it right for a man of my years and experience to go to school a boy?” (Antigone, Scene 3, p. 673, I 95). By him saying this he was be lilting the young man just because of his age, the fact that he went to school and wasn't royalty. Creon thought he was right and could not be wrong because of him being older and king. This flaw would also be the flaw that causes him his downfall. From im always thinking his ways were right he started doing things that eventually led to multiple deaths in his family. By the end of the book Creon had a catharsis. Once Creon had his catharsis he was officially eligib;e to be labeled as a tragic hero. By now Creon has showed each component to prove that he truly was and is the only tragic hero in “Antigone”. After all of his family died and the gods stopped listening to him he started to think about his actions. Once Creon started to realize all of his wrong doings and sayings led to all of the deaths he felt bad and tried to fix things.
