Chief Seattle once said, “If all the beast were gone, men would die from a great loneliness of spirit, for whatever happens to the beast also happens to man. All things are connected. Whatever befalls the Earth befalls the son of the Earth.” This quote shows how the Native Americans look at how they live and the way of life. In the upcoming pages we will be discussing the Navajo, a group of Native Americans living in the parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and the edges of Colorado, culture and how their culture affects their day-to-day lives today. Some of this is storytelling and incorporating the past traditions into their daily lives today. While other traditions are beginning to die out. Take the Navajo native language for example, according to the New directions for adult and continuing education, only eighty-seven of the one hundred and fifty-five American Indian languages are spoken. These are mainly spoken by adult who are no longer teaching their children the language (Lockard.) While the American Indian languages are slowly decreasing and causing a loss in their native cultural languages, others parts of the Native American culture are stronger than ever. For example Eleanor Kubl, the author to the article, “Weaving Wisdom With Hard Work” takes us through the life of Linda Taylor, a Navajo Indian living on a farm in Cortez Colorado. The article takes s through the day of first meeting Linda by starting with Eleanor finding Linda in her kitchen, “experimenting in the kitchen with a new bread recipe.” Then the article goes on to show some of the daily practices in her life. Storytelling is a way for all people to hear stories of their past ancestors. These storytellings are mainly done as a huge group people but can just be amongst a family. When storytelling occurs there are many items involved to tell the story in any Indian nation. In the Navajo culture this involves one person begin the storyteller, normally one of the elders of the tribe with the prior stories and along with some current and utmost. These stories can involve war a main event in their past, or any other thing that could make a story about their past. With these stories there is dancing singing chants and many other forms of interaction that get the other people involved in the story as well as learning how to carry on the storytelling tradition. These stories can be told at any of these events or any other form of gathering, some can include: preparing for a war, potluck, celebrations of new tribe members, festivals, and many other gatherings. Today storytelling is mainly used in family’s and surrounding families and friends that have some of the same traditions and use storytelling to keep the Navajo storytelling tradition alive. For example there are many videos of Navajo storytelling. I found one of a boy and his family, the grandfather was telling the story with a lot of hand movements, dance, song, and many other actions to help involve the grandson into the
