Intro Paragraph (THESIS IN BOLD PINK)
Across the nation schools are debating if they should keep sports. According to the Scholastic article, sports are embedded in American schools, yet this fact rarely comes up in conversations about why America lags behind other countries academically. Therefore, sports should not be offered at schools because students will have better academic results, because it costs districts a great deal of money, and America is falling behind academically.

Body Paragraph #1-
According to the article, “Should Your School Get Rid of Sports?”, it states that students’ academic performances will improve with less of an emphasis on sports at school. “In the Fall of 2012, Premont High School suspended sports and at

Summary and Critique In Amanda Ripley’s article, “The Case Against High School Sports,” she insists that sports have an insignificant role in schools and, consequently, harms students, their performance in school, and the schools themselves. Ripley believes that students without sports programs benefit from the exclusion of sports and schools can also benefit or improve with the excess funds from sports (1-3). While Ripley’s argument has some merit, at least at first glance, the main ideas are lacking solid evidence and are cherry picked. Ripley believes that schools in the United States that have a sports program are immediately behind other schools academically and the students are more likely to focus on sports than they are academics.…

Many people would say it’s not even close school and academic is so much better for a kid than participating in a sport in high school. One reason schools shouldn’t have competitive sports is that kids are young and can hurt themselves easily or sacrifice other opportunities. Many in the field of sports are young. 60% of boys and 47% of girls are competing on sports teams by the time they’re six years old. As the child grows, training intensifies and expands to the off-season, making practice essentially year-round.…

the text states… “Public schools are all about “equal opportunity.” This term means that everyone, no matter who they are, receives the same opportunities.” This supports my answer since anybody gender or race aside can mabey become the star of the football team or be the best golfer in 5 years. The text also states “ If we cut back school sports, some kids will find themselves shut out of sports completely. “ This further supports my answer since if we got rid of sports the cost for a private league is super expensive and most families can’t afford that so they might not be able to do…

High school sport synthesis The position I stand with when it comes to supporting sports or not in SUHSD is that I think that we should support sports. The source that led me to believe that sports are good towards academics is Daniel H. Bowen and Collin Hitt’s article High-School Sports Aren’t Killing Academics. They state that there's evidence that sports provide success in academics rather than just focusing on sports with lower grades. As for Amanda Ripley’s text The Case Against High School Sports is against having high school sports and says that our academics are not comparable to places like South Korea and Finland.…

Of all the aspects of high school, participating in sports is a mutual interest of the students. High school sports are events where students can showcase their talents, learn valuable life lessons, and stay active in their years of adolescence. “In The Case Against High School Sports,” Amanda Ripley argues that high school sports should be terminated because they are expensive and prioritized over education and safety. The author argues that high schools should get rid of sports because they are too expensive.…

The first article I read was “The Case Against High School Sports.” The author, Amanda Ripley, explained how high school sports are minimizing the school budget, and causing there to be less money distributed towards academic funding. Another main point is made around how students are not being as successful due to the level of involvement in sports. This article discussed logos such as the cost of education versus sports. A student pays $328 for a math education whereas a cheerleader will spend more than 4 times that much by paying $1,348.…

I think High School should not have sports programs. In source 1 paragraph 5 some schools just like MVRHS sports are their religion and in this high school the principle would whether pay big money to sports than to school's funds. In paragraph 6 in source 1 the kids at Martha's Vineyard Regional High School have to wake up very early like at 6:00 or 6:30 to get to school so the atheletic could have their classes and this cause the half of the student body to very tired which cause depression from the lack of sleep. In source 3 paragraph 1 a high school in Portland teens their have amazing test scores.…

The list could go on and on about what is wrong with high school sports in this generation. It starts when they’re young, parent coaches who only qualify because they played the specific sport when they were younger. That is brought into high school, with their child playing the same sport they “coach”, not getting to experience anything other than what their parent’s knowledge and what they could tell them. I’m not saying all high school athletes who are coached by their parents aren’t going to get any better, but I am saying that if you are going to hire a coach for a program, make sure they are more qualified than just being a parent in the district or having a little playing experience. High school is the preparation stage for college, both academically and athletically.…

Around the world many would say that American sports are taken much more serious and are much more involved than other countries. Some critics argue that the superiority of sports in America conflict with other issues such as in “The Case Against High School Sports” by Amanda Ripley. She makes a bold statement arguing that high school sport students become negligent in education within the American society. However, there is no correlation between low test scores and participation in sports in America; after school activities such as sports keep students out of trouble, and being involved in sports teaches students the lesson of balancing major conflicting events. Amanda Ripley argues that sports in America is why education in the United States has lower test scores than other countries such as South Korea and Finland.…

15 Originally school was all about education. But as time went by more and more has been added on. For example we have clubs that may not have anything to do with any of the main classes we are required to take. Sports is one of those added on ones. Although sports are not educational, many do join sports every year.…

Therefore, schools should remove sports to save money, give children a better chance at academic success, and allow students more time for other activities. Doubtlessly, there would be a higher percentage of children passing tests, and getting better grades, if sports were canceled. Schools would have more money, children would have more freetime, and last but not least, academic success would be improving.…

At first glance many people think that sports are too time consuming. Many experts have done studies that show the positive impacts sports have on children. Sport participation in school does not worsen academic results despite taking time away from class (Maximizing the Benefits of Youth Sport). Athletes know that they don’t have as much time to do schoolwork, which makes them more motivated to use their time for school. Students that aren’t athletes don’t use their free time for school which makes them less likely to do quality schoolwork.…
