This article discusses about the importance of screening a client psychologically before cosmetic or plastic surgery. The cosmetic surgery is considered successful if the increase in patient’s self-esteem and body image is noted. According to studies, many clients who undergo cosmetic surgery show increase in these aspects (pg. – 344). It is very important to identify patient’s motive of the surgery, expectations, understanding of risks and assessment of anxiety pre-operatively (pg. – 346). Many people who don’t like the results, go through another corrective surgery. They either achieve their desired look or they end up as a deformed which is irreversible. This article is great to read for both surgeons and patients because assessing patients before surgery can reduce the risk of patient’s dissatisfaction and further surgeries. After all, plastic surgeries and cosmetic surgeries are mot reversible and they are not guaranteed to be as equal to desired outcome. In the article, testimonies from various women with alopecia are mentioned in order to further explain the psychological and physiological side effects of this condition. According to the research, the average of 95% Australian women with diagnosis of cancer and receiving chemotherapy have poor body image due to alopecia and it was affecting their lives overall.
