In the article, the interviewer interviewed several transgender men (from female to male) and she found some shocking answers. The transgender men noticed that women are oppressed in the workplace and in every day life. The view of transgenders today are easily comparable to the stereotypical Venetian woman in many ways. During the venetian times, woman were looked at like they were slight circus attractions or in other words they were just normal to stare at, just as transgenders are looked at today. In Othello Desdemona would be comparable to the transgender people of today. Iago portrays Desdemona as a "white ewe" in order to make her father angry so that he'd pick a fight with Othello. In Christianity, a white "ewe" or sheep was considered a symbol of purity and …show more content…
During the early stages of our lives the person in the world whom we love most was our mothers, and we carried from that relationship the expectation that women would be just like our mothers. B. "By implication, a woman’s brain is all about intuition, empathy, and picking up on social cues, what was once known as sugar and spice and everything nice, and is sometimes marked as coming from Venus." C. "When I am away from female company for a while, I miss the woman’s touch, and eye, and self. At a younger time, when my sexual relationships were more transient than I would have liked, my friendships with women were winningly permanent." D. Women taught him how to be gentile and kind.

A mother in today's society has to be strong willed and have endless determination and kindness for her children. The way that a mother, or parent raises their child effects their perception of life completely. If a mother raises her daughter to no be rebellious, but to not be oppressed, then her daughter would be like Emilia. Emilia is one of the few strong females in Shakespeare's plays. She refuses to be belittled or seen as unequal to men. In fact, in one scene, she seems to talk about having an affair like a man would. Emilia describes that she is better than men because she doesn't have the appetite that men have. We know not of Emilia's background but it is understood that she either comes from a modernized family or she had an influence of which gave her the bold nature that she

Men use women to quench their thirsts and to satisfy their “appetites”; once they’ve had enough they just dump the remains. Emilia makes this comment about men because of what is going on with Othello’s attitude towards Desdemona. Emilia’s cynical attitude towards men is even more apparent when she says that men don’t appreciate women once they get what they want, therefore, making them bad because they use…

Speaking freely before the court assembly, Othello is told by a senator to “use Desdemona well” (I.iii.92) for his sexual pleasures. Nonetheless, it is Shakespear’s Emilia, in “Othello,” who most explicitly states the vile oppression women of patriarchal dominance suffer, saying “They eat us hungerly and when they are full / They belch us.” (III.iv.101-102). In these eras of hopeless victimization, women have very little power to combat their…

Shakespeare artfully either reinforces stereotypes, or breaks them down with the ways in which his women characters act. Desdemona is portrayed as being a young person in a modern society that requires her to fulfill certain characteristics; in other words she is a “stereotypical women” in Shakespeare’s society. On the other hand, Bianca is portrayed as the opposite to Desdemona, she is shown to be very outspoken and - to a certain extent - vulgar. Bianca is portrayed as jealous, as well as possessive. Emilia is also shown to be very outspoken, clever, and flirtatious at certain times, and - as such - is not what a “proper” women should be.…

There are many instances in the play Othello where gender roles become significant. During Shakespeare’s time, men hold the power and women are perceived as weak and powerless. Also, women are expected to be submissive to their man by doing whatever he asks of her and this is very apparent in the play Othello. The role of women in the play, determines the plot and the fate of some of the character’s involved. The way Shakespeare creates these roles in the play, shows his culture’s beliefs of gender and equality during this time period.…

The theme of identity in Othello is brought up by the way certain circumstances shape a certain identity. In this essay I will explore the female identity, the racial identity, the military identity and the manipulated identity and how it evokes certain actions or response. The supposed female identity has been decided by the men of the society, as seen by the outright proclamation of what Iago believes to be the proper, perfect woman. In 2.1, Iago not only uses repetition of the word “never”, the choice of diction of such an absolute word like “never” reflects that all these criteria of women was what was assumed by the society to be obvious and completely correct, that the conduct of women to be “never proud”, “never loud”, “never gay”, is something that has been established and should be abided by.…

Not many of Shakespeare’s plays contain a female character in the lead role position. Therefore, when female characters have a prominent role in plays it is something to pay attention to. For instance, in Measure for Measure, Isabella’s character serves to break down the patriarchy by using their own constructs to emphasize how outrageous their ideas are. Isabella does this by falling into one of the three categories that the patriarchy says women belong to. In this society, women are either maid, widow, or wife and problems occur when women do not fall into one of the three defined categories.…
