Advertisements target young women by selling their products through desirable looking models. Media is where young girls look in order to see what is the social norm or what is considered attractive. Here they will find abnormally thin models with bodies that are unattainable, leaving them dissatisfied with their own looks. Women, who view the media constantly and are exposed to these thin- ideals, develop unhealthy attitudes about body satisfaction and may engage in unhealthy weight loss behaviors. This article addresses the issue of the body size of women becoming increasingly smaller. Models and celebrities are often beautiful with a desirable body that many associate with their success. Cultivation Theory helps to explain why and how the media affects women and their dissatisfaction with their body. The Cultivation Theory is the affect of consuming television and other media on a consumer and how this may change their perceptions of reality. Being constantly exposed to the ideals and attitudes of the thin ideal versus a large body type can be transferred over into a women’s daily life. This article examines the relationship between the Western standard of female and male beauty and the process of social globalization. The objective of this article is to look at the role mass media plays in creating male and female attitudes towards their ideal body image and how these can be culturally induced and have an impact on their mental health.
