Some of the reasons provided included: pain, shortages of staff, anxiety, failed inductions resulting in cesarean sections, and their personal plans not being followed (Crawford et al., 2017). Inductions require continuous fetal monitoring, due to the medications being used. Continuous fetal monitoring has been shown to increase cesarean section rates, which I will discuss in another source that I am using. This is how I am tying this into my PICO topic. This study was done on term, low-risk pregnant women. There were 13,000 women in the study conducted in Ireland and the UK. The main focus on the study revealed that there was a better ability to predict an acid- base issue by using cardiotocography. Though the results also showed that there was an increased risk of cesarean sections in the women that used cardiotography by 20%. It was suggested that women should be informed of the increase risk of cesarean section if cardiotography is used versus intermittent auscultation (Devane et al., 2012). The study shows me that intermittent monitoring is a safer option for low risk women in the area of decreasing cesarean section
