Anne Of Green Gables Literary Analysis

In L.M. Montgomery’s novel, Anne of Green Gables, Montgomery fills the novel with many highs and lows, just like the iconic sound of ocean waves. The tribulations and trials of the main character, Anne, will leave the reader speechless at times. The novel becomes powerful with culture and history of that era as Montgomery creates a scenic picture for the reader with her use of details. Montgomery use of literary elements and details is similar to the sound of an ocean wave, because when one hears the calming or clashing sound, he or she can automatically picture a descriptive image of a wave in his or hers mind. Like stated before, the novel has its share of hardships and trials, which can easily be referred to as a wave crashing during a storm. The abandonment and orphanage is simply just the beginning of what the main character goes through. Even through the storms Anne faces she pushes through and overcomes them. The sound of the storming waves crashing down on the shore maybe frightening, but the storm does not last forever and the thunderous noise will become peaceful once again. Also, the loud rushing water can be familiarized with Anne and other character’s opinion on excessive talking: “ ‘For pity’s sake hold your tongue,’ said Marilla. ‘You talk entirely too much for a little girl’ ” (33). The peaceful sound of a wave ending is easily compared to the final words of the novel: “ ‘God’s in his heaven, all’s right with the world,’ ” whispered Anne softly (245). With these words the reader is given peace, knowing Anne will be persevere despite death, the decline of Marilla’s health, and Anne coming into adulthood. The sound of a tranquil wave approaching the shore can leave one lost for words, even more so Montgomery's easy but perfect ending will deliver the same
