The Canine Nurses Institute made the first push to train veterinary assistants to work in England. Fifty-two years later, the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science tracked down three different layers of animal technicians. In 1989, the AVMA (American Veterinary Medical Association) properly accepted and identified the term “Veterinary Technician”. Although the origin of this career is unknown, the credit is given to the AVMA. Michigan State University and Nebraska Technical colleges were the first two animal technician programs to be accepted by the AVMA. The North American Veterinary Technician Association worked closely with AVMA to support and defend the art of veterinary technology.
