The Damaged Truth behind a Performance Animal’s For decades, circus’ have been very entertaining to people, but no one knows what goes on behind the curtains. There is a wide range of species in the performance industry, but very few understand how they are treated. Zoos and circus’ all have animals that are treated alike, or some might be worse. Both of the industries have the animals stuck in cages, barely fed enough, and unable to have the social life they are meant to have. There are some differences in zoos and circus’ for example; in the circus industry, elephants are chained up for, “12-23 hours per day when not performing”(Lossa, 134), but rarely ever are they chained up in zoos. Everyone has different opinions on zoos and circus’ about whether they agree with them or not, but there are many reasons to why people shouldn’t agree with the industry. Elephants, tigers, bears, monkeys, etc. are all caught in captivity for their life. They are then thrown into cages with chains, and forced to learn new techniques to perform. When people go to the zoo or the circus they never really think what goes on when nobody is there, but looking into the animal's eyes it can be seen that they’re miserable. All of the animal’s in the cages are taken out of their home and brought into a small cage and treated poorly. The animals in the industry are all free range animals from the wild and are meant to be there. In the recent hundred years the performance industry has given so many people fun times to enjoy looking at all the exotic animals, but they also need to be aware of the many times the animals are treated poorly, are hungry and unfed, and also locked in the cages for hours and have had no roaming
