Shelterware Brings "Benevolent Computing" to Smithtown Animal Shelter

2. Narration
The Smithtown Animal Shelter houses about 120 ready-to-adopt animals at any given time. Two students from Stony Brook University, Elizabeth Crowe and Matt Lagueras, have teamed up to help the shelter meet the needs of the animals and the community using mobile computing and social media.

3. Narration
Shelterware was created to assist the Smithtown Animal Shelter update its record-keeping from an antiquated paper-based system to a modern digital system, so that the shelter’s limited staff resources can be better optimized. The Shelterware system will allow the …show more content…
This database will generate a catalog of pets for adoption, which can be accessed by potential adopters on the web. Potential adopters will now be able to fill out an online application form.

5. Narration
A field application allows staff to use iPhones for the identification of lost animals. Staff will be able to scan QR codes attached to the collars of lost animals, or photograph the animals. This data will then be uploaded to a database with a time and date stamp along with the lost animals’ location data.

6. Narration
Student volunteers from Stony Brook University will utilize the system for scheduling visits and ride shares to the shelter. Students will be able to journalize their interactions with the pets for the adoption in the Shelterware system, a feature called Dogs with Blogs.
