This novel is an allegory because this author uses animals in the form of actual people. These animals were acting out the Russian revolution. An allegory is a story that has a hidden meaning. They animals are specific people like Trotsky is represented by snowball, Mr. Pilkington represents England, and Frederick represents Germany.
