Animal Experimentation Persuasive Essay

Theodore a two year old chimpanzee sits in a cage while he watches other chimps week by week get taken out of their cages and some never returning. Today is a different day for Theodore, for he will be taken out of his cage. As Theodore sits in his cage, a woman wearing a long white coat picks Theodore up and carries him to a room filled with other people wearing long white coats. Little does Theodore know that he is about to be used in an experiment that could lead to his death. Animal experimentation is a problem that has been around for more than one-hundred fifty years. From fifty to one-hundred million animals are killed each year worldwide for experiments. Animal experimentation is unethical and can be replaced by using other methods. Animal experimentation has been a controversial topic for many years. Author Patricia George says that animal experimentation is the least cruel aspect of death for animals, and that death is a part of life that is unavoidable (1). Although animal experimentation have some benefits it is still unethical and unnecessary. Defenders of animal experimentation suggest that animals may experience less pain than humans. However all mammal have similar nerve structure for feeling pain. If it is unethical to conduct research on humans without consent why is it different for animals? Animals just like humans have rights. Supporters of animal experimentation say that using animals are important, however there are many methods used today that do not require the use of animals.
