Animals cannot cry out against cruelty. They have no voice to oppose injustice. While buying purebred puppies can be a tempting and aesthetically desirable purchase, a majority of puppies bought from pet shops are directly from puppy mills. These puppy mills are known as large-scale commercial dog breeding facilities which give revenue priority over the well-being of the dogs and puppies, ultimately resulting in sickly and unhealthy animals. Due to this, many of the dogs that pet stores carry today have faced a life of malnutrition, disease, and abuse. Despite the immense abuse the dogs and puppies of the puppy mills endure, the large scale breeding of animals is still legal, forcing innocent animals to live in cruel conditions until they are ultimately moved to pet shops, or killed. Altogether, in order to protect the lives of innocent animals, puppy mills…

The first option is for the Australian state governments to outlaw greyhound racing altogether as both the industry, dog owners, and trainers have displayed their incompetence to maintain a level of animal welfare. While critics to this proposal will argue the revenue generated from greyhound racing is of key importance to the Australian economy, Price Waterhouse Cooper concluded the industry is a ‘consumptive sector’ that doesn’t ‘generate any significant productivity benefits to the rest of the economy (Animals Australia, 2017). From an animal rights position, on the surface this proposal appears to be a win that will end unnecessary abuse and suffering of animals particularly given the systematic disregard for animal rights demonstrated by use of live baiting. However, one key question must be raised, with an estimated 300,000 racing dogs, what will be the dogs’ fait if racing was to be outlawed? With between 13,000 to 17,000 dogs being killed as it stands, it’s fair to assume majority of the racing dogs would be euthanised which in itself would raise ethical concerns.…

Thousands of cases of animal abuse are filed each year, but less than a quarter of them lead to convictions (Friedman 34). Many of these cases filed are due to the use of animals in entertainment. Today, places like zoos, circuses, bull fights, horse races, and others use animals as amusement. These entertainment industries thrive on well trained and compliant animals, which is difficult to achieve. Trainers then use punishment and cruelty to train and care for those animals.…
