Imagine having appendicitis, unknowingly, it bursts in the middle of the day, and emergency surgery is needed. The pain before the surgery is so excruciating, and all that is desired is relief from that stabbing pressure in the right side of the stomach. Doctors surround and prep the patient for the operation. The patient is asked to count back from a number, while the anesthesiologist administers the anesthesia. The patient becomes completely unconscious, waking up hours later with no reconciliation of what happened. But now, that stabbing pressure in the patient’s stomach is gone, and the patient can carry on his/her life free of that particular pain. Pain is something mostly all humans have experience with, whether it’s physical pain or emotional pain. Sometimes, the pain can be so aggravating, its takes over the mind, restricting one to stay focused. This is typically when surgery is needed. The drug that relieves this pain during surgery is anesthesia. Anesthesia was discovered around the middle 1800s, and has been consistently advancing. Not only has anesthesia been advancing itself, but it has also allowed for other aspects of healthcare to move forward, giving anesthesiologists’ and other medical professionals a better understanding of how the human body works and how it responds to certain opiates and other drugs when put into the body.
