Assimilation for Native Americans continues today. Education plays a large factor in assimilation, as Native Americans have greater access to the same level of education as white Americans, Natives begin leaving the reservation to pursue college and technical courses, leaving behind their culture and heritage. Unfortunately, Jackson’s decision to break the law and forego negotiations with Native American tribes and instead forcefully relocate Native Americans to government owned land will always cast a shadow on Jackson’s presidency. The Trail of Tears is a terrible chapter in our United States history, causing the deaths of thousands of innocent Native American people but the research does suggest that Andrew Jackson may have had the best interest of the Native American people in mind.
