Magical Medicine of Ancient Egypt The medical techniques of the Ancient Egyptians were far more advanced than the rest of the world, even the Greeks, at the time. The Ancient Egyptians believed that the body consisted of 46 channels, in which the heart was in the center of them. This was somewhat true, but they never discovered that each channel had a different function. However, they had some vague ideas about the functions of the brain and liver. Any health issue would result from the evil spirit Wehedu and angry gods that blocked channels. Ancient Egyptians were proficient in surgeries on the surface of the body. Some of the many surgical tools include saws, forceps (tongs or pincers), scales, shears, hooks, spoons, drills, graduated cubit (measuring rod), and knives. Relocating jaws, cutting off diseased gums, and draining abscesses (concentrated pus)in the mouth were the dental surgeries existing at the time. Doctors could not perform deep surgery because they didn’t have any strong pain relievers or ones that would safely put the patient in a deep sleep. Furthermore, injuries and health issues were classified into three categories. Handled immediately were treatable injuries. Problems not deemed life-threatening were called contestable injuries, where the patient was expected to survive. In these cases, doctors just observed the patient.
