Ancient Egypt Clothing Essay

In Ancient Egypt, clothing was made out of countless different fabrics and materials for different reasons; they used fabrics such as linen, cotton, wool, silk, loincloth, and leather. Some clothing articles worn by the Ancient Egyptians consisted of robes, shirts, aprons, sashes tunics, and loincloths.Since Egypt’s climate has hot summers and mild winters they wore clothes made of light plant fibers, mostly linen. Linen was made by spinning or weaving flax which were both a tedious processes. To complete the spinning process they break the flax fibers, put them through machines called spreaders This constantly pulls and elongates the linen until it is given its final twist for strength and then it is wound on the bobbin and dried. Most footwear such as sandals were made of leather, footwear was only worn on special occasions. (Ancient Egyptian Fabrics and Clothing - Crystalinks) Men mostly wore simple garments such as loincloths with shirts and later changes in fashion occurred and they began to wear tunics or blouses with sleeves. Women’s clothing was relatively more conservative, it consisted of sheath dresses which were known as a Kalasiris. These dresses were long, down to the ankle and held up by straps around the shoulders. Shawls or robes could be worn over the dress if desired.
