Jeff Q and Michael Craig Miller from Harvard Medical School Stated “Neuroscientist suspect that adolescent brain is wired with emotional turbulence and retreat from family”(Biositc & Miller 1). These emotional turbulences result in many teens’ mental unease, with anxiety being the preeminent one. It is said that “One of twelve teens suffer severe depression before the age of 18”( Jeff & Miller 1) Holden Claufield like many other adolescents suffers anxiety and depression. This is caused by tragic experiences that occurred during Holden’s lifetime. Experiences such as Ally’s death have left a scar in Holden mentally, causing many cases of depression. These cases of anxiety and depression can be seen through Holden’s narration. Throughout the whole book Holden seems to see the worst of things, for example his teacher Mr. Antolini. The simple act of patting ones head is considered gay in Holden’s limited perspective. This thought of something bad is about to happen is the soul definition of “Anxiety”(Stabinsky 2). Furthermore, depression throughout the novel can be identified through Holden’s view of the world. Holden similar to many teens see the ugliness in society and find it unbearable. Identity development is definitely the results to ones teenager years. The actions a teenager takes to plant the roots to their own character and Identity is significant for their future. Parker, Elizabeth Cassidy from teen psychology specified “Adolescence a time for identity development, as the childhood self learns to integrate with important peers as well as adults” An individuals teenager year is time where they first handedly come in contact with society. What identifies who someone is, is the step they take after this encounter. Holden during his journey has developed his identity immensely. Comparing Holden’s character at the begging and end of the novel the change can be easily identify. At the beginning of this novel Holden wants to be the Catcher in the Rye. However towards the end of this Novel Holden finally begins to understand who he truly is himself, and accepts it. He knows that he cannot be the catcher in the rye, but what he can be is stay strong for someone. That is the essence to a teen ‘s identity development, eventually becoming self actualized like
