Christian represents a faithful Christian who is dedicated to God’s Word and seeks to have a relationship with God by talking to Him. When Evangelist tells Christian that he needs to be saved, Christian recognizes his need of salvation. He comes to the cross where his burden falls off which signifies the moment your receive Christ as your Savior. After he is saved he embarks on a life-long, hard journey to the celestial city (heaven) where he will face many trials.
Christian values God’s Word, the Bible, very highly and uses it when temptations come to him. He also uses the Bible to show others of their need for salvation. While he is on the the path to the Celestial City, he meets one named ignorance who is trusting in his works to get him to heaven. He says the following to Ignorance: ...the word of God saieth of persons in a natural condition, There is none righteous, there is none that doeth good. However, Little Faith still retained his scroll (his “ticket” to Heaven) and his gems (representing his rewards he would receive in heaven). Although he kept these things, he was depressed and not satisfied. After being robbed, Little Faith was little use to God or anyone else. For the rest of his journey, when he met other pilgrims on their way to the Celestial City, he would tell them of his misfortune and bemoan the fact that he had lost his worldly possessions. If Little Faith had had more faith, he could have fought off the attackers using the Bible (like Christian did). However, that was not the case. Little Faith is a representation of one who is saved, but trusts in his worldly possessions more than he trusts in God.
Through these two characters, we can learn many truths. We can learn to value God’s word as Faithful did. Besides valuing God’s word, we can also learn to talk to God as Faithful did and to trust in God-opposite of what Little Faith did. Lastly, we can learn not to value our earthly possessions more than things in Heaven-as Little Faith did. Rather, we should “..lay up for [ourselves] treasures in heaven…” (Matthew
