Harry for instance was to never be sold due to the warm heart of Mr.Shelby, and Mrs.Shelby promise to Eliza that it would never happen. (Ch.1) But soon both Tom and Harry were sold in order for Mr.Shelby to get out debt, and showing that slave owners didn’t really care for their slaves as they claimed they did. (pg.27) However Mr.Shelby wasn’t the only person to show this trait, Uncle Tom’s other master, St. Clare also promised to free Tom after the passing of his beloved daughter Eva. For example, Uncle Tom was a very religious man, and lived life heavily based on his christian morals. Even when given clear reasons to try to escape towards Canada Tom stays with his faith and lets nothing break him and his vision of going to heaven, and remaining a good man. So much of a good Christian man he refused to help kill Legree who has previously beaten down Tom. (pg.335) Tom was never disobedient to his masters, although he doesn’t listen to whip Cassy, it his strong religious beliefs that cause him to show this somewhat resistance, and show his loyalty to fellow slaves and christianity. (pg.302) Eva also believe strongly in the Christian faith and helps lead Topsy in the correct way of living life and having hope for something better than focusing on the negatives that she has had to live through with her previous masters. Many other slaves were taught christian teachings and were one way they should have a hope for a better future, through the strength of god. Uncle Tom’s Cabin had demonstrated that many slaves lost their families, been treated unfairly, told they would be cared for, but weren’t and all because of the evil era of slavery.
