Analysis Of Thinking For Yourself By Shel Silverstein

Decent Essays
This poem, by Shel Silverstein, empowers me to think for myself. Listening to other peoples choices for your life decisions can make you brainwashed. You begin to think they are the ones who are right, but actually you should be thinking for yourself. Without control of that voice inside you, people would be steering you in all different directions like a steering wheel in a vehicle. The emotions in this poem are very distinctive. There are emotions such as regret, confidence, and braveness. The way these emotions are embedded in this poem are events that might have happened to the writer. In the writer's life they may have not listened to themselves and listened to others. They wanted to remind us to be confident with who you are and always

In the Spoon river Anthology, Edgar Lee Masters develops regret in his poems, Richard Bone, Doc Meyers, and Mrs. Merrit. Throughout the whole book regret is shown in almost every poem, but the three I listed above are the strongest ones. The first poem I picked was Richard Bone. This poem is about the guy that carves the epitaphs in the headstones. At first he didn't know what to think about his job, it seemed odd to him what some of the people brought him to write.…

Dark periods in our lives leads us to live in regret and desperation as sorrow seizes its control inside our hearts and minds. In “Letter to You,” by Sappho Scott, a woman, frightened and engulfed in her own desires, writes a mental imagery of words she struggles to find. This letter is not to her husband, to a family member, or a friend, but to a child she lost due to her own life choices. A decision she believes is only made between her and her child that she created and that she chose to execute in her own womb. A choice she wants to live herself as she feels the pain deep throb inside her as she describes her own experiences.…

In life and literature, individuals will have an opinion of themselves and those around them. Where one will view oneself as well as others with their own perspective and interests in mind. In some cases, one will have a similar opinion compared to other people’s thoughts about them. Whereas in other cases, individuals will have different outlooks on themselves compared to those around them. Peter and Wendy are two characters in Ray Bradbury’s short story, “The Veldt” that are seen to be evil by their parents but regular children to themselves.…

Life is made of stories, and when people grow older, they become wiser thanks to their lives’ stories. That is what they call, “experience.” Furthermore, no matter if those experiences are made of positive or negative memories, they are in charge of shaping people’s personalities. As is the case of Carrie Fountain with her poem “Experience.” In her poem, Fountain explains how people feel remorse for things done in their younger years, how people actions may seem right when in reality they are truly foolish, and though those events in the past may be shameful, thanks to them people become what they are.…

Within the poetry I have studied throughout the year, I have found that most poems show feelings of distress, however, acceptance is also present. Bruce Dawe and Kenneth Slessor successfully portray the distress of war in their poems, whereas Sylvia Plath and Wilfred Owen show this feeling through different examples of suffering. Rudyard Kipling and Maya Angelou are two poets who I believed showed their readers how to accept things in life, whether you can influence them or not. These different poems show that many feelings can be portrayed through literature. Bruce Dawe and Kenneth Slessor both explore the theme of death in their poems Homecoming and Beach Burial, which both portray feelings of distress.…

Introduction Among all the famous contemporary children’s poets, Shel Silverstein is hailed as one of the most popular authors of children’s books in the twentieth century and is dubbed “Poet laureate of kids” by the critic Megan Rosenfeld. His poems are not only embraced by children but by people of all ages; one of the solid proof is that they have been translated into over 30 languages and some of them have been adopted for animations. In some of his reputed poems he depicted the alienation of man from Nature as well as fellow beings. Our relationships have become more centered on money and individual self-interest.…

Hello, I chose the poem “Spelling Father” by Marshall Davis-Jones. The reason that I chose this poem and what spoke to me was the fact that this was a young man that was fatherless. When he was explaining everything that mothers do for their children, it just spoke to me on how so many children grow up without having their fathers in their lives. I would describe the writer’s writing style as one who uses many metaphors to organize his poem verse by verse. There were many words used in the poem like cleaned, hugged, and kisses, all to describe his mother doing the things he wished his father did for him.…

In his essay “Thought,” Louis H. Sullivan greatly stresses the importance of thinking critically and creatively, and presents the argument that one must think not in words but rather in images, rhythm, and other wordless forms of communication. Sullivan resorts heavily on comparisons and analogies and metaphors to convey the impractical usage of words. “But in passing I may say that real thinking is better done without words than with them, and creative thinking must be done without words,” Sullivan argues, and he goes on to explain the intellectual heft and rigor of thinking creatively and highlights its rewards. Sullivan also asserts that one must think in the present and the present alone, for his reasoning is that “you cannot in the past,…

Gwendolyn Brooks does a great job of discussing the issues, which African Americans faced during the time of the poem’s publication in the 1950’s in Chicago. Brooks does so in a clear and concise way that engages the readers by using alliteration, rhyme, and monosyllabic words. So when reading the poem it flows easily, and has a catchy, chant like quality. Have you ever wondered if the choices that you make really matter? In Robert Frost’s poem “The Road Not Taken” he explores the finality of your decisions and how they will affect you in “ages and ages hence.” In the poem Mr. Frost discusses taking a walk through a “yellow woods” as he comes across a fork in the path and deliberates over which path to take. In a world where facts are distorted, terror is courage, and anyone can create their own tale or story, is a place where people like Shakespeare, Rich and Randal are able to create verses that speak meaning. That is poetry. The poems, “When my love swears that she is made of truth” by William Shakespeare, “Storm warnings” by Adrienne Rich, and “Ballad of Birmingham” by Dudley Randal utilizes literary devices to create tone in order to transmit the author’s purpose of ignorance, valor, and fear. William Shakespeare’s poem “When my love swears she is made of truth”, creates the tone of ignorance to symbolize unity within his marriage.…
