As I look into the eyes of the people I love, I see the true face of addiction. The truth does not lie in the eyes of the addict, but in the eyes of the ones who love and care for them. That is where you see the pain, heartache, struggle and overwhelming feeling of failure. A sense of failure which arises from the thought that you could not save them, that you could not protect them. The loss of a loved one to addiction is a loss unlike any other. Why? Because, simply put, you are angry. As your heart breaks and you become overwhelmed with sorrow, you also become overwhelmed with anger. Now, I don't look at addicts and see the face of addiction. I look at their loved ones and see that for they take on the pain and struggle...and when that person is lost they take the weight of the world on their shoulders and struggle to stay afloat in what seems like an endless see of pain. The memories, although happy, are accompanied by the darkness. You fight back the demons that are the bad memories to save the light of the good ones. Although this is hard, it is what must be done for your sanity which has been jeopardized by anger. You must always remember the love and to love because no matter how bad the storm got the love never changed, it never faded. Love is unbreakable even after what and who we loved is gone. That is the light in the dark and the laughter amidst the tears because although your heart is broken, you know love will always remain. If you're struggling, ask yourself one simple question...is it truly worth it? This one question holds so much meaning in it because in asking it you are forced to ask is it worth it not only for yourself, but for the ones YOU LOVE and who love you in return.
