Analysis Of The Shabbat

The Shabbat is a story about two families that are in Iran during a war. At first it seems that both families are in denial that a war is about to happen because they brush off the fact that the Iraqis could have missiles and one of the parents have to get confirmation from television, but they tragically find out that a war is actually happening. This shows how even though people could see something happen right in front of them, they won’t believe it until they get confirmation from others, or the news. This is like when something happens in this day and age people won’t believe it until they check social media then the news although the event could have happened right before the person’s

September 11, 2011 was a very rough time to say the least for many citizens of the US. On this day the US was put to test by a terrorist group named Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda hijacked four different planes and flew two of them into the twin trade centers in New York. Another plane was flown into the pentagon in Washington DC, and the last plane crashed in the middle of nowhere in Pennsylvania because the passengers on the plane fought back against the terrorists who were hijacking it. By watching a documentary on George W. Bush about how he responded to 9/11 I was able to see that this event was crucial to America, and depending on how Bush reacted to the event, it would determine the outcome of the attacks.…

All throughout time there are songs that have been seen as controversial, with the song I Wish I Was in Dixie which deals with slavery and racism to the song One in a Million by Guns N’ Roses which talks about homophobia, racism, nativism, and xenophobia. One such song that has withstood the test of time is Dear Mr. President by P!nk, this song references the shortcomings of President George. W. Bush specifically the homeless, abortion, the Iraq War in 2003, the President’s lack of empathy for the poor and middle class, and the President’s disapproval of homosexuality. When the song was released there was a “radio ban” placed on it meaning that the song was not played on U.S. radio stations, similar to what happened to the Dixie Chicks after…

September 11th, 2011 I had just come home from school. As I walked past the corridor and into the living room I look to my right to see my mom sitting cross-legged on the floor in front of the television, quietly crying. The news was on, which was very usual for my household in the afternoon. Realizing that I was home my mom turned around and got up to hug me. The role of women within society has never been bright. It has often shown itself to be abusive, repressive, and controlling for the better part of all world history. However, the photography of William Mortensen tells a much different story. His work has been able to grasp the compelling spirit of femininity and the power that every woman upholds as her own ruler. In this paper I will discuss the artistic portal of powerful femininity, a woman’s place as deemed fit by society, and Mortenson’s macabre sense of style that the institution would deem wrong in the eyes of the academy.…

There are few things that traditional western culture values more than protecting the innocence of a child. It is not often considered, but many go to great lengths to guard this intangible element of childhood. “The Shabbat”, an excerpt from Marjane Satrapi’s graphic memoir Persepolis, chronicles young Satrapi’s loss of innocence in a terrible way. This comic tells the story of a little Iranian girl who is living through the Islamic Revolution, all from a first-person retrospective point of view. In other words, this story recounts the horrors that a little girl faces in a war zone.…

The Bhagavad-Gita is a rather small section in the overall massive text of the Mahabharata. However, the size of this passage had no effect on its ability to influence. The likes of Henry David Thoreau, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Annie Besant, and Mohandas K. Gandhi were all inspired or influenced by this text. The Bhagavad-Gita wouldn’t be the inspiring text is it today if it hadn’t been influenced by many other religious texts that came before it. The Bhagavad-Gita takes ideas from other religious texts and reinterprets them to fit with its own agenda.…

The Story of Pedro Serrano, as told by el Inca, Garcilaso de la Vega, had a deep impact on me. More specifically, the part that was most was the first interaction between Serrano, the main character, and the other unnamed survivor that was introduced halfway through the short story. Serrano had been stranded on the island for three years and had acquired hair all over—so much so, that it was compared by de la Vega to “an animal’s pelt.” The new survivor on the island was still dressed as a normal Spanish sailor, whereas Serrano had seemed to morph into a different person all together—one who was as mentally unstable as he was physically. When these two very different characters met for the first time, they were both shocked.…
